The Foundation of the Game: Official Rules and Dimensions of the Table Tennis Table

The table tennis table is formally called the playing surface. It must be a flat, rectangular shape. The surface must be exactly 2.74 meters long. It must be exactly 1.525 meters wide.

The surface must sit in a perfectly horizontal plane. It must be positioned exactly 76 centimeters above the floor.

The vertical sides of the tabletop are not part of the playing surface. If a ball hits the side edge of the table during a rally, the ball is considered out of bounds.

The playing surface can be made of any material. It can be made of wood, plastic, or composite blends. However, the material must pass a strict bounce test.

To test the surface, a standard ball is dropped from a height of 30 centimeters. The ball must bounce straight up to a uniform height of 23 centimeters.

This bounce test must yield the same result across every single square inch of the table. A consistent bounce ensures that players do not experience dead spots or unpredictable spins during an intense match.

The top surface of the table must have a dark color. Common colors used in international tournaments include matte blue, matte green, or matte black.

The finish on the surface must be completely matte and non-glossy. This prevents bright stadium lights from reflecting into the eyes of the players or the umpires.

Every table must feature specific white boundary lines painted along its surface:

• Side Lines: Two white lines run along the 2.74-meter edges. They must be exactly 2 centimeters wide.
• End Lines: Two white lines run along the 1.525-meter edges. They must be exactly 2 centimeters wide.

For doubles matches, the table surface must be divided into two equal half-courts. This division is marked by a single white line called the center line.

The center line runs parallel to the long side lines. It must measure exactly 3 millimeters wide.
